The importance of FM services

An NHS trust in Manchester has raised concerns about poor cleaning standards in the city. 

The trust was so concerned that it escalated the matterto a regional director for outsourcing firm G4S.

This decision was taken at a report of the meeting between members of the Pennine Acute NHS Trust hospitals board at the end of November 2015.

A report to the trust said: “Concerns about overall contract performance and standards on all sites have been formally escalated by the trust to the G4S regional director. The trust expects to see an improvement in performance and this is being closely monitored on a weekly basis.

“Monitoring of contractor compliance with training, cleaning methods, equipment, cleaning chemicals, HR documentation and records has also been implemented… On the spot checks, some concerns have been raised with the contractor. These relate to the standard of floors and damp cleaning. An improvement plan has been implemented by G4S.” 

Outsourcing

The report above highlights the importance of thorough cleaning and of outsourcing such duties to a reputable organisation. The great news is more and more businesses and organisations are starting to realise this and invest in reputable services.

Indeed, findings published by AMA Research revealed a 4.5 per cent annual growth in the market.

However, despite this, the report showed that the market was largely dominated by larger FM contractors, while there was also sustained pressure on margins, reflecting consolidation in the market.

The report also revealed that the majority (75 per cent) of services by value are thought to be outsourced in some way. 

However, the findings showed a number of mergers and acquisitions have taken place over the last few years.

This has largely been influenced by the maturing market, as well as changes in the economic climate.

Despite the positive findings, Keith Taylor, director of AMA Research has forecasts cutbacks to FM services in the near future.

He said: “The need to minimise operational costs and redundancies resulting in a reduction in workforces has seen many organisations reducing office space, and this is having a negative influence on the FM market as contract values are cut.

“These cutbacks in FM contracts usually occur at the time of re-tendering but have also become more prevalent mid-contract, though pressures have been easing in the private sector as employment levels recover. However, the benefit of office rationalisation has seen a growth in use of niche services such as workspace management and move planning.”
