Saving the world, one sheet at a time

December 31st, 2013 Category: Educational Establishments Office Cleaning

Christmas may be officially over for this year, but this doesn’t mean you can’t buy yourself one more gift. If you have made a New Year’s resolution to be more environmentally friendly in 2014 then go online and buy yourself a Polaroll.

The Polaroll is a toilet tissue dispenser shaped like a Polaroid SX-70 One Step White/Rainbow camera. Although these types of cameras are no longer produced, everybody is probably still familiar with its design.

When a person takes a photograph on a Polaroid the picture is immediately produced through a slot at the front. A lot of waving and shaking later, et voila you have your picture!

The Polaroll works in a similar way. The device is fixed to the bathroom wall just like any other toilet roll holder or dispenser. Instead of film, this camera allows you to pull toilet tissue, rather than photos, through the slot one sheet at a time.

The design of the Polaroll is quirky and adds an 80s flare to any bathroom, but it also allows the user to become more conscious of how much toilet roll they use every time they sit on the porcelain throne.

As the dispenser issues the toilet roll one sheet at a time the amount of tissue used on each visit will be reduced. This will mean that the amount of waste a household produces will also decrease.

In the UK, every person flushes approximately 17.6 kilos (39lbs) of toilet paper down the loo every year. This works out at around 50 rolls of toilet tissue for every Briton per year!

This is almost two and half times the European average, according to the European Tissue Symposium.

By decreasing the amount of toilet roll each household uses per year it will help to reduce bills and the amount of waste a household produces.

This isn’t the first toilet roll innovation that intends to reduce waste – last year Sainsbury’s introduced slimline rolls with the aim of reducing the company’s carbon emissions by 140 tonnes per year.

The move will mean 500 less lorries are needed to deliver the packs of toilet roll every year!

By fitting a Polaroll into your bathroom you could help protect the environment, one sheet at a time.
