Salute your porcelain throne!

Get your loo brushes at the ready, invest in some luxury toilet roll and take a moment to appreciate your toilet as today is World Toilet Day!

Why toilets? You probably don’t realise how important your loo really is. Perhaps you get a glimpse of its real value when you’re desperate to go and the bathroom is occupied. You may have to dance around on the landing for ten minutes or so but eventually the door will open and your salvation will be found when you take a seat.

However, not everyone in the world is lucky enough to have a toilet, never mind a bathroom.

Have a real think about how you would survive without access to a functioning bathroom. It wouldn’t be a case of not being able to apply your mascara properly or being unable to have a morning shave. The real issue would be finding somewhere to relieve yourself while trying to stay healthy. Doesn’t sound easy, does it?

WaterAid is a big supporter of World Toilet Day. They estimate that one in three people in the world don’t have access to any sort of toilet facilities: that’s approximately 2.5 billion people. This means they are more at risk from the germs that are produced in human waste and are more likely to become sick. Sadly, 700,000 children die every year from illnesses caused by poor and unsafe sanitation.

To tackle this intolerable element of extreme poverty, WaterAid build thousands of toilets every year. They are produced using local materials and are perfectly designed for the people who need them. The charity asks that you take a long look at your toilet and think about what you can do to raise money and improve sanitation standards for others.

Sit on the toilet for a whole day! Well…not your actual one but a seat template available for download on WaterAid’s website. Stick it on your office or school chair, decorate it and put it on display for all to see. Don’t forget to tweet that you’ve been on the toilet all day!

So, next time you’re about to head to the bathroom, remember how fortunate you are. Your toilet plays an important role in your life, perhaps you should treat it to a fancy smelling rim block to show your appreciation.
