BIFM releases new waste and recycling guidelines

The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has released a new good practice guide it hopes will help form a basis for better knowledge in the cleaning and building management industry by giving companies the information they need to know.

The Recycling and Waste Management GPG is sponsored by Waste Cost Reduction Service (WCRS) and the company said that it is an important new string to its bow. It said that waste management and recycling are now two of the biggest issues in the industry, and companies want to know how to deal with them.

"We recognise that every business has different corporate values, cost constraints, waste streams, storage and collection requirements and we have worked with the BIFM to outline the key principles of good practice in recycling and waste management with this in mind,” said Tony Windsor, managing director of WCRS.

Recycling is an issue for corporations and small businesses the world over as they try to reduce their carbon footprint and move towards the targets set by the government of being "zero carbon" by 2050.

Users of this new guide will be able to see what is driving improvements in waste and recycling at the current time, as well as getting advice on good practice including compliance, health and safety, auditing and communication.

It means that they will be able to check how their own current practices look with regards to their commitment to the environment, and BIFM also said it will let companies recognise their corporate responsibilities and confirm their own practices with regards to sustainability moving forward.

Other highlights of the good practice guide include the fact those using it can get practical advice on how to improve their own recycling practices, and tips on how to be more green and sustainable moving forward. This will help them continue with their facilities management in the way they are, while also lowering their impact on the environment.
