Tips for the final summer cleaning push

For cleaners and school staff alike, the start of the new term is now only a few days away, which can mean only one thing – the last chance to get the classrooms, hallways and other areas prepared for the return of pupils and the year ahead.

It can be hard to get the school to look spick and span throughout term times, so it is always better to do so before the kids are back in and the place is empty more often. But what are the key areas to focus on to make sure the school is ready?

Floors are a good place to start, and it is always advisable to have a plan in place before simply diving in and starting cleaning tasks.

Go around the school with a pen and paper and take note of which floors need to be scrubbed, which need shampoo cleaning and which simply need a little detail cleaning. This can help cleaning contractors and staff alike to target jobs and work through them in a much more efficient manner.

Have a clear out of cupboards for the next task – throughout the year, it is easy to accumulate things that will never be of use again, so it is always easier to get rid of these before you get busy again. As a general rule, throw away anything you have not used in the last six months.

This will also be a chance for cleaning staff to get ready for the year ahead though, and they too can look at clearing out their cupboards to rid themselves of old chemicals and things they won't use. Have a look at the equipment used as well to see what is in a poor state of repair. Replacing them now will always lead to an easier and smoother transition into the new school year.

And finally, make sure to give everything a good dust and polish. This will be the cherry on the cake that makes for a spick and span school that looks brand new for the pupils arriving back at the start of the new term.
