Make earth day every day

Earth Day has once again raised awareness of green practices in the workplace, but in order to instil a legacy, companies should be looking to implement environmentally-friendly policies day-to-day.

April 22nd is a good reminder of the importance of protecting the environment, particularly in the workplace, where most of us spend the lion’s share of our day. But in order to act upon the teachings, implementing a sustainable environment policy will ensure businesses become eco-friendly as a matter of best practice.

Lisa Evans from Entrepreneur says there are four ways to  make your office more eco-friendly. The first is encouraging smarter commuting, such as carpooling or providing minibus transfers to workers that live close by. Cycling, walking and running are also a great way of cutting CO2 emissions, and companies should ensure that awareness is improved in this area and that the right facilities are in place to support alternative methods of travel.

Cutting down on paper use is another viable way of caring for the environment, and having recycle points in place will also mitigate the damage natural resource use has on the planet. In a digital age, reducing the amount of paper circulating through the office is easier than ever. Even if printing is necessary, using recycled paper and printing on both sides can cut the environmental impact of such tasks.

Reducing energy consumption by turning off equipment at night and eliminating ‘energy vampires’ such as phone chargers, televisions and anything else with an LED display is important. Assessing the lighting situation in the office is also handy. Replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) or energy efficient T8 or T5 fluorescent tubes instead of T12s can reduce energy consumption by around 40 per cent.

Finally, sourcing food for meetings or the staff cafeteria from local providers is a great way of supporting the local economy and promoting sustainability. If you don’t already, you should also consider using a green cleaning company for the everyday office chores, which will eliminate the amount of harmful toxins used in the office clean.
