NHS runs hygiene campaign

January is often a depressing month. The post-Christmas blues have set in, people are short of cash and the weather is cold and wet.

But winter is also commonly associated with illness, with bugs such as the norovirus causing havoc.

The NHS is therefore trying to help by encouraging people to remember basic good practice when it comes to hygiene.

Its 'Catch It. Bin It. Kill It' campaign commenced on January 2nd and reminds Britons to use a tissue when they cough or sneeze and then dispose of it, as well as to wash their hands regularly.

The campaign is being run across different media and if people heed the advice, they might manage to stave off a winter illness this year.

This would certainly be good news for employers, as having members of staff downed by sickness is the last thing they want.

After all, losing working days costs both time and money, both of which are precious resources for businesses even in a favourable economic climate.

As a result, it might be a good idea for them to take steps to ensure greater workplace hygiene and advise staff on how to stop winter bugs spreading.

Bringing in office cleaning specialists to regularly give their premises the once-over might also be a good idea, as it will stop germs and other nasties building up on people's desks and work surfaces.

Anna Soubry, the public health minister, commented: "The NHS is experienced in dealing with the extra pressure the winter period can bring every year and is coping well so far this winter."

However, she pointed out that the number of sicknesses is likely to go up now that the children are back at school following the Christmas holiday.

Ms Soubry said the steps recommended in the 'Catch It. Bin It. Kill It' campaign are "simple" and could play a "big part in limiting the spread of flu" this year.
